I'm Iyad Khamis — a Lebanese English teacher who has spent years analysing the specific gaps between Arabic and English. I know which pronunciation challenges are structural (the P/B distinction, the English 'th', short vowel contrasts) versus habitual. Why do Arabic speakers struggle with English articles?

Arabic has no indefinite article equivalent to 'a/an' and uses 'ال' (al-) as a definite article with different rules to 'the'. This creates systematic errors that are easy to fix once the underlying rule is made explicit. In a standard English class, article errors are corrected in isolation; in a bilingual lesson, the Arabic contrast is explained directly, and students eliminate the error pattern in one or two sessions.

What are the hardest English sounds for Arabic speakers?

The three most common Arabic-speaker pronunciation challenges are: (1) P vs B — Arabic has no /p/ sound, so 'park' and 'bark' sound identical; (2) the English 'th' sounds (/θ/ as in 'think' and /ð/ as in 'this'), which have no Arabic equivalents; (3) short vs long vowel distinctions (/ɪ/ vs /iː/, /ʊ/ vs /uː/). All three are systematically correctable with targeted drilling.

Absolutely. Arabic speakers are among the most successful IELTS candidates when they receive targeted preparation that addresses their specific starting patterns — not generic IELTS coaching. The typical Arabic-speaker weaknesses in IELTS Writing (article errors, cohesive device overuse) and Speaking (pronunciation, false starts) are all predictable and all correctable within a structured programme.
